So I bought this in preparation for my first alpine experience in September this year. I had never used an ice axe, and could count on my hand the amount of times I had seen snow in my life. But I researched, learnt how to use crampons and ice axe, and got the chance to put it into practice. Let me say, this Ice Axe was brilliant. Lightweight, incredibly helpful when the slope gets too much for your walking poles. Great for keeping balance, and I always felt comfortable even on moderate exposed ridgelines when I had this in my hand. I practiced self belay and this axe just grips. For the price, if you need something and are unsure what to buy, grab this one. One minor note is make sure to get a cover (i bought a cheapy elsewhere). You dont want the axe destroying your equipment. I couldnt find a suitable cover for the spike so used cardboard for travel, which worked. PS the spike, very helpful. I used this in place of walking poles the higher I went
