Intro to Avalanche Safety

At its very basic, an avalanche can be wet or dry, big or small, but they are snow masses moving down the slope. It can become deadly if proper care has not taken before ice climbing or skiing. It is important to know where and why avalanche occurs so that you can avoid them while enjoying in snowfields and snow covered mountains. Salewa, Black Diamond, Ferrino, Trespass, and Climbing Technology offers avalanche safety gear.

When And Where The Avalanche Occurs?

Once you know when and where the avalanche can happen, you can make observations to minimize the risks of getting trapped in a slide. There are three main factors that can cause an avalanche to happen;

• Unstable snow
• Avalanche terrain
• A trigger
If you successfully avoid these factors and use a black diamond avalanche safety set, the chances of an avalanche are zero. Unstable snow means that it could slide you downhill. Many factors affect snowpack stability such as weather, temperature, wind, precipitation, and sun.

The key to skiing safely in the backcountry is to recognize the avalanche terrains. Understanding avalanche terrain helps you make better plans to take a safe route. The third and most potent factor is a trigger that can cause an avalanche to happen. If you are moving weight over uneven snow, an avalanche is likely to occur. Hence, be careful in choosing the terrains to avoid accidents.
