Super self-braking, allowing you to belay in 5 steps like a “normal” ATC, easy to give a lot of slack by applying the appropriate method with your thumb, without letting go of the rope! It remains a braking car; even if we have confidence, we don't let go of the rope!! 4 stars because of the noise of the plastic, to see the wear over time.

After trying several assisted braking systems, this one won me over. It's easy to add slack, very pleasant to control the rapid or slow descent without any jerk by rotating it more or less with the left hand (for right-handers and vice versa). Very simple, ergonomic, very pleasant and very safe in the event of theft. Opinion shared by everyone I had it try.

Came in a plastic bag that was put in a box along with bubble wrap (though it was not wrapped in the bubble wrap). This box was then put in the outermost plastic packaging, so it was pretty well protected. Haven't tried it yet but it looks fine so far.

Best ATC / sport climbing brake I've ever used! Comfortable design, I believe to be the only ambidextrous autoblocante (I had difficulty with mega jul and grigri for being left-handed), very easy to use and super safe, I highly recommend it !!

In my opinion it is the perfect insurer for sport climbing, it is lightweight, very easy to use, friction zones are made of steel, and it is one of the cheapest automatic insurers on the market. I highly recommend it

A great product, easy to give slack in the head. In the locked position lets the rope slide very slightly (millimeter by millimeter) which is good for us to keep in mind that we must hold the lifeline. Negative point the pilot being in stainless steel, it marks the aluminum carabiner. We can ask the question of the lifespan of the carabiner. Too bad there are not several colors.

Better than a standard ATC, easy to set up and use. Good for climbing gyms, very happy with how it assists in lowering the climber as an assisted belay device. If you use it with a HMS style carabiner as recommended by BD, or even better use it with a Black Diamond Gridlock Magnetron (as I have) - it would be even better as you would avoid crossloading whilst belaying.

In the last months I was curious to test various belaying devices: WildCountryRevo, Petzl Grigri 2 and Plus, ClimbingTechnology AlpineUp, different basic ATCs and also this BD Pilot. Each one is amazing, but still Grigri is the king due to its exceptional versatility as belayer, self ascending insurer and rappeler. Revo is great belayer but some issues are as self ascender. AlpineUp is great for belaying and rapelling even on 2 ropes (that made it very valuable asset) but not useful for self belaying. About BD Pilot ATC can say I was surprised to find it very versatile also and much lightest I expected (80 grams). The price is also good, as is very simple construction and to be used. Is working very smooth as belayer and rapeller, also is possible to self belay. Whatever you have to do is to rotate front-back the device to increase/decrease the rope breaking. I observed that the rounded edge carabiners (ex. Ocun Harpy) are breaking less than sharper carabiners (ex. Petzl Am'D). That is why is better to use BD Pilot with BD Gridlock, it seems to be the best working together.

Working extreme smooth. During my trial I observed the rounded edges belay carabiners are little slipping (ex. Ocun Harpy), but the carabiners with sharper edges are firmly locking (ex. Petzl Am'D).

I do not give it the five stars, because I think that the perfect is yet to be discovered. Apart from this, it is an assisted insurer (although I could almost say it is automatic), very quick to give and recover rope, without unwanted "blockages". It's like an evolution of the CT Click Up, which improves it on strings that already have their kilometers and have "fattened" slightly. The ATC Pilot works perfectly, with new rope and those already used. The over cost of a GriGri2 +, for me, is not justified in any aspect of operation with respect to the BD ATC Pilot, or other assisted insurers.
